Over 200 attendees from the cultural heritage and galleries/libraries/archives/museums sector heard from several members of IPTC working groups and friends of IPTC at the Archives and GenAI Symposium, organised by the Trust in Archives Initiative.
Slide from WITNESS presentation at the GenAI and Archives Symposium, with text Needs we've identified detailing Provenance awareness and infrastructure and more.

Yvonne Ng from WITNESS presented on their work studying C2PA Content Credentials and other standards and their relevance to the archives and cultural heritage sector.

Among many other speakers, we heard from Ottar A. B. Anderson (who also spoke at the IPTC Photo Metadata Conference a few weeks ago) on his work with the Digital Object Authenticity Working Group (DOAWG), and their proposal for new properties in the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard which will be put to the member vote in October.

Eric Scouten of Adobe and the Creator Assertions Working Group (CAWG) gave an overview of C2PA and CAWG and how they relate to the archives industry. Brendan Quinn, Managing Director of IPTC presented across several initiatives that are relevant to the archives sector, such as our work on AI opt-out, our Media Provenance Committee, tools and guidance, and how the Digital Source Type property in Photo Metadata is used across the industry to signal not just AI-generated content but also content created by humans, directly from a camera or via scanning tools.

Among the other speakers were Yvonne Ng from WITNESS speaking on her organisation’s work to analyse potential human rights issues with C2PA and other content provenance technologies; Jefferson Bailey of the Internet Archive speaking on how they use AI in their work maintaining the world’s largest archive of internet content; Kate Murray of the US Library of Congress presenting new FADGI guidelines, “Tiered Community Recommendations for Content Authenticity and Provenance (TCR4CAP)” and Bertram Lyons of Magnet Forensics on how the law enforcement community is starting to understand the basics of media provenance such as the ideas that screenshots can easily be faked and should not be trusted at face value.
